Green Flag with Merit award

We at Ramsgate Holy Trinity have once again been awarded a coveted Eco-Schools Green Flag with Merit. The Eco-Schools Green Flag is an international accreditation that recognises efforts to raise environmental awareness amongst young people, whilst taking action to make their school more sustainable. Ramsgate Holy Trinity has now retained its status as an accredited Eco-School, following their achievement last year. The Eco-Schools programme was established in 1994 and is now delivered in more than 70 countries across the globe. The programme prompts young people to explore a variety of environmental issues, including climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Pupils are then empowered to plan and deliver environmental actions in their school, local community, and beyond.

Since Ramsgate Holy Trinity began working towards an Eco-Schools Green Flag in 2022, achievements have included litter picking, recycling and enjoying tending to our plants in our greenhouse and allotment.  This year, pupils at Ramsgate Holy Trinity have built on these strong foundations, collaborating with Mrs Marshall to work on three Eco-Schools topics: waste, energy and biodiversity. They planned a variety of projects including recycling food waste, entering the Kent Wilder Award and having light monitors to be mindful to turn lights off when not needed.

Pupils at Ramsgate Holy Trinity are passionate about wildlife and caring for the world they live in.  The children enjoy linking this passion practically as well as engaging with learning opportunities in Science, Drama and English.  Eco-Schools England Manager, Adam Flint, said:

“The Eco-Schools Green Flag award is an internationally recognised symbol of high environmental standards. The pupils and school staff that earn the award deserve immense credit for their hard work, determination, and creativity. Their passion for protecting our planet is an inspiration to us all.”

Latest News 

This year, Class 1 and 2 have linked with Densholme Farm in West Yorkshire.  This is enriching their understanding of seasons, life on a farm and is linking to their curriculum in a meaningful way. 

By Zooming on a regular basis, the children are enjoying listening to Farmer Dennis share the history of his farm, learning about the current jobs he is working on and being taken on a virtual tour around his farm.  The children especially love to see the goats, chickens, pigs and tractors.  Full of curiosity, they are always brimming with questions to ask Farmer Dennis. 

Last week, he showed them how to tend to our own school allotment as now it is time to plant.  He showed us how to enrich the soil, plant onions and keep the weeds at bay.  Class 1 and 2 are now making plans to make a start on their own allotment patch. 

Just before last week’s Zoom call was ending, Farmer Dennis asked if the children would like to see his ‘two new additions’.  The children were bewildered but cheered, ‘Yes!’  He revealed two beautiful, black 3-day-old lambs - and said Ramsgate Holy Trinity can name them.  Names will be confirmed later this week!
